Are you into hiking? Czechia is a hiker’s paradise! Would you believe that in this small country, there are over 40,000 kilometers of marked routes? By the way, it’s more than the Earth’s circumference! Do you want to know where to find them? Read further and learn more about hiking trails in the Czech Republic!
Unique network of hiking trails in the Czech Republic
Hiking has a long tradition in the Czech Republic. More than 100 years ago, the Czech Tourist Club was founded. Its members came with the idea of setting up a network of trails that would help other hikers find a way to attractive trip destinations.
They designed an easy-to-follow set of symbols and then marked thousands of kilometers of trails outdoors. Little by little, the network became huge! Today, volunteers among the club members maintain the whole system and keep it up-to-date.
Hiking trails will get you anywhere!
Nowadays, the trail network is so dense that you can basically follow these routes to get anywhere. Some of these pathways lead to a mountain top, other ones will take you to a breathtaking view or a castle ruin. Some routes will even walk you through a town center! These trails usually start at a train station or a bus stop. Isn’t it great? 👍
Are you looking for hiking maps?
If you’d like to have a map with all these hiking trails, I have good news for you! The Czech Tourist Club produces great hiking maps on a scale of 1:50,000. Moreover, they cover the whole area of the Czech Republic!
You can buy these maps in bookstores or tourist visitor centers, sometimes even in a local grocery store! If you want to support a good thing, just grab one. You will not regret it! One map usually covers one specific area (e.g., a mountain range), and it costs about 4 $.
In Czechia, there are other map producers as well. Basically, all printed maps that are available on the market are great. They have similar content, only their graphics and design are different.
But wait – a map showing all the marked hiking trails is also available online and FOR FREE! 😲 Read my post about online hiking maps to learn where you can find this map and how to use it.
Get familiar with the symbols
All hiking trails in the Czech Republic are marked with the same set of symbols. You can find them on trees, rocks, poles, fences, walls, or just any handy spots that are available along the way.
The basic symbol is 10×10 cm large and consists of 3 horizontal stripes. The middle one (red, blue, green, or yellow) is the actual path’s color and matches the color used in the hiking map. The upper and lower stripe are always white. They only help you find the sign easily.
Sometimes, the basic symbol is modified into an arrow. It means you have to turn in the shown direction. Common sense, huh? 🙃
Once in a while, you will come across a signpost showing how many kilometers are left to your destination. For the most part, you’ll find them on route junctions or other important places.
There are more variations of the basic symbol, but you will not see them very often. They may look like these:
You’ll see the symbols often enough so that you shouldn’t get lost. When you pass a crossing, look around and make sure you haven’t missed the arrow symbol.
It’s that simple!
